It's no real surprise that a lot of what makes Yusuke
Yusuke can be derived from his upbringing, and a quick look at that will show us that it wasn't very run of the mill. Yusuke was orphaned when he was quite young, but was quickly taken in by Madarame; a man who would become Yusuke's father figure and artistic mentor. The key factor here though, is that Madarame kept Yusuke very, very sheltered while he was growing up, and it's this sheltered childhood that gave birth to a lot of the traits of Yusuke's personality that many other characters label as "eccentric".
One aspect we can see quite a lot when he's first introduced, is that Yusuke's way of thinking is often very pure at heart, albeit very naive at times. And the other side of this is...we can also get a sense that Yusuke's not exactly used to some of the social norms or cues that many other characters are; one prime example being when he virtually stalks a young woman out of desire for her to model for a painting, and then gets very, very insistent that she take the job once they
do finally talk face to face. This doesn't mean Yusuke's a bad kid though; it's simply that he doesn't have a lot of experience built up yet to make him realize there're some things he might do or say that
won't be ok, or "normal" by most people's standards. And while some of his actions might come across as pushy or strange whenever, mostly his artistic vision's involved...other than that? For the most part, he's pretty polite and cordial with people he doesn't know very well. He's not unkind towards people either, and he's definitely capable of warming up to them too.
In fact, we can see a lot of Yusuke's growth through the time he spends with the Protagonist in the game. While Yusuke's goals for their time together originally starts out as something to help him through his artistic slump, he eventually comes to a few realizations about himself along the way. One major realization is that he's become "tainted" in regards to his artistic motivations...namely that he no longer wants to do art simply for art's sake, but to gain a profit, and gain attention for his work. However, this is a vital first step in Yusuke realizing the greater complexities of the human heart, and acknowledging that it's ok for Yusuke himself to have conflicting emotions.
Yusuke's mentor, Madarame, is a chief source of some of the conflicting emotions that Yusuke
does harbor. Madarame is a man he'd respected and lived with for so long, that he originally refused to see, or believe any accusations against him. Yusuke
did eventually open his eyes to the truth and acknowledge every horrible thing that Madarame did; namely plagiarizing his own student's artwork...and also the emotional abuse he had inflicted on Yusuke as well. And yet, while Yusuke
was angry at all of this, he couldn't completely let go of the more positive experiences he'd had with the man who'd raised him either.
But Yusuke's initially sheltered life, if nothing else, was an environment that nurtured his passion for art and his growth as an artist as well. There's nothing that Yusuke loves more than art, and searching for a way to capture beauty with art. We can see displays of that intense passion constantly; whether it's from him always commenting on scenes that're aesthetically pleasing, or using what little money he has to purchase something that sparks some inspiration in him. Naturally, even his greatest source of both comfort and inspiration comes from a painting as well; the "Sayuri". It's a piece that Yusuke's used as a goal for his own work, where he hopes to capture a beauty at the same level that the "Sayuri" has. Even Yusuke awakening to his original persona was for the purpose of a contract that would show Madarame the "difference between vice and beauty".
Yusuke's motivation to improve his artwork is ultimately what helps him out in other aspects of his life as well. It's helped him grow into a person who always rises to a challenge, and who seeks to broaden his horizons. We can see this even in decisions he makes after living on his own, by choosing to live at his school dormitory specifically so he'll become more accustomed to people.

Writing Sample [A flower festival...just as he'd imagined, it is indeed a sight to behold with a vast array of creativity. The banners and booths have obvious work put into them, and in such a way that the entire area seems to be full of radiant life. There's no question that this is a scene of beauty that Yusuke aims to capture while he's here...even though there's so much to take in, it could prove difficult to acquire a sketch of every display he's particularly fond of.
As it stands...right now, Yusuke's hardly made his way into the festival- stopped just a little ways past the entrance as he surveys the scene to select his first piece.] Magnificent...Yes...
yes, this will make for a perfect composition!
[Words that are said to seemingly no one in particular, as there's no one accompanying Yusuke to the festival for the moment, and no one by his side. Perhaps they were thoughts meant to be kept internal, and yet they were most definitely said out loud.
Yusuke doesn't seem deterred by anyone who stops to give him odd looks though. In fact, he doesn't even seem to notice them as he holds his fingers out to make a makeshift frame for composition of some of the flowers and booths directly in front of him. This truly is a rare opportunity though, and one he doesn't intend to let go to waste.
A few more moments pass with him silently adjusting his hands and position before he seems satisfied, and then out comes his sketchbook. There's a quiet intensity about him as he begins the outline for his new piece; even as his gaze quickly travels between the scene and the sketchbook itself. The only thing that seems able to break his concentration is whenever a passerby stops directly in front of his line of sight.
A small frown forms on his face and he gestures with his hand in a slight waving motion, as if he's trying to sweep them to the side.]Excuse me. Could you please move along? You're disrupting my work.
